PRUSZKOW, Poland — German Stefan Nimke upset Taylor Phinney of Boulder in the 1-kilometer time trial Friday at the track world championships.
Nimke, an Olympic bronze medalist in the team sprint, finished in 1 minute, 0.666 seconds.
Phinney, who won the individual pursuit Thursday, was in awe of Nimke’s ride.
“I was definitely not expecting that fast of a time,” said Phinney, who clocked 1:01.611. “Nimke’s ride was phenomenal, I was definitely really impressed.”
• Alejandro Valverde won the final stage of the Vuelta of Castilla and Leon, but Levi Leipheimer won the overall title after finishing two seconds behind in Valladolid, Spain.
O’Hair leads at Bay Hill; Woods five shots back
ORLANDO, Fla. — Sean O’Hair opened with three straight birdies en route to a 5-under-par 65 for a three-shot lead over Jason Gore (70—135) after the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Tiger Woods remained in the mix for a sixth title at Bay Hill, courtesy of a short game that turned a mediocre round into a 69.
• In-Kyung Kim shot her second consecutive 4-under 68 to take a two-stroke lead over Suzann Pettersen (69) and Karrie Webb (68) halfway through the J Golf Phoenix LPGA International. Two-time defending champion Lorena Ochoa had a triple bogey en route to her second straight 72 and was eight shots off the pace at even-par 144.
• David Eger shot a 5-under 67 to sit atop a crowded leaderboard after the first round of the Cap Cana Championship in the Dominican Republic.
• Marcel Siem shot a 5-under 67 for a 135 total and one-stroke lead at the halfway point of the Andalucian Open in Seville, Spain.
Chiefs’ Johnson gets probation
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson was sentenced to two years’ probation after pleading guilty to two counts of disturbing the peace for separate incidents involving women at nightclubs last year.
While on probation, Johnson will not be allowed to consume alcohol or be at any Kansas City bars or nightclubs after 9 p.m. He also must complete anger-control counseling and 40 hours of community service.
