When the Peek e-mail device was released last summer, no one thought it would succeed. The hand-held e-mail-only device charged a flat rate of $20 a month and is selling briskly.

The new Peek Pronto is an $80 device that adds a few features to the Peek lineup. The Pronto comes in charcoal black and has a 2.5-inch screen and full qwerty keyboard.

The Peek Pronto includes unlimited text messaging with push e-mail support. The software is considerably faster than the older model and lets you view PDF and Microsoft Office documents. It is compatible with Microsoft Exchange as well as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail. It is available at .

Why would anyone who has a smartphone need a separate e-mail device? The Peek is aimed at business users who might not want to spend a few hundred dollars a month in data-use fees. Having a separate Peek Pronto also lets you “accidentally” leave your e-mail device at the office, giving you a weekend of freedom. — John Biggs
