COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Colorado Department of Human Services has stepped in to oversee a financially troubled agency that coordinates services for more than 2,200 developmentally disabled adults and children in El Paso, Teller and Park counties.
The Resource Exchange is one of 20 Community Center Boards that contract with the state to serve severely disabled people. It has struggled financially for years and said last spring that it would close its doors because of “inadequate state funding.”
Legislators responded with a $1.45 million bailout. But a consultant for the state found there were doubts about the agency’s ability to keep going.
State officials say they believe the problems can be fixed and are exploring various options.
