MILAN — The U.S. government has anointed Italian automaker Fiat in the role of savior for Chrysler LLC, making $6 billion in additional aid conditional on a transatlantic tie-up.
There is broad consensus that a Fiat- Chrysler alliance makes sense.
Chrysler lacks Fiat’s small- and medium- car platforms, which President Barack Obama’s auto-industry panel believes could renew Chrysler’s deficient line in those segments. Fiat is an industry leader in fuel-efficient engines, and the panel believes Chry sler would struggle to meet new standards. The link would provide entry into new markets, notably Europe.
