Go head, set your sights high. You had to Monday night if you were vertically challenged and wanted to make eye contact with Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Andersen, Nene and other members of the Denver Nuggets taking part in the Mile High Dreams Gala.
Formerly known as Chopper’s Dinner, this night of food and fun was renamed, and reinvigorated, last year as a way to raise money for the children’s charities supported by Kroenke Sports Charities and Denver Active 2 0/30 Club. Players and coaches from all five Kroenke Sports teams — Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Crush, Mammoth and Rapids — show up to mix and mingle with fans at the food stations and gaming tables set up on the floor of the Pepsi Center.
Hollywood Nights was the theme this year, and guests were encouraged to break out their most glamorous attire.
Holly Kylberg, there with sisters Gerda and Kristina Spears, evoked Veronica Lake with her long, blond hair offset by a va-va-voom red dress that hugged every curve. Jordan Bullock, marketing vice president for the Jet Cos., sparkled in purple sequins as she enjoyed the party with Briar Sangiuliano, Jill Weaver and Dennis Clayton.
Publicist Jim Guttau, fresh from a snowboarding weekend in Crested Butte, was there with Internet radio host Amy Rubin, while Anne Robinson, executive director of Beacon Youth and Family Center, was there as a guest of Key Bank’s Steve Slaughter. Key Bank was one of the benefit’s sponsors and Slaughter is a member of the Beacon Center board.
Others glimpsed in the crowd of about 1,000: nightclub owner Billy Ward; “Chef D” Daniel Young; such Active 2 0/30 members as Alex Cmil, Chris Haeck, Dave Sjerven, Mark Clouatre and Dave Dixon; and Heather Brant, area marketing manager for Porsche, another of the sponsors.
Coming right up.
A blizzard may have forced Centura Health to postpone its popular Soup for the Soul (the new date is Thursday at the Sheraton Denver Downtown), but organizers want folks to know that nothing went to waste. “At the suggestion of our chefs, everything was donated to local shelters,” reports Chris Agnew, who started this benefit for Porter Hospice and St. Anthony’s Hospice nine years ago. Anyone who didn’t get a ticket for the original go-round can buy one for the new date by calling 303-715-7615. . . . A second soup-oriented event, this to benefit the Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition, is set for April 23 at the Cable Center. Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien is scheduled to present the Big Shot of the Year award to Dr. James Todd. Chefs from Strings, Satchel’s Market, Red Tango and Table 6 are among those contributing to the evening’s menu. Sign up via e-mail: crawford.dawn@tchden.org. . . . Johnny Bench comes to town April 21 to speak at the Warren Village Breakfast of Champions; top-tier supporters have been invited to a meet-and-greet with the Baseball Hall of Fame catcher the night before.
