“Destination Wildlife” ($20, Perigee) initially had me wary because so many guidebooks these days seem determined to make money from getting folks out there no matter the cost. But author Pamela K. Brodowsky and the book’s co-author, the National Wildlife Federation, promise this one is different. A check of the parks and preserves offered in this paperback confirm their billing as primarily places that “promote the least environmental impact while providing a thrilling educational and emotional experience.” Still, there are a few places whose political or other affiliations might require research to make sure they are in line with your values. The book is organized by continent, and the narrative-style listings offer basic information, including costs, amenities and contacts, as well as field notes and the wildlife you can expect to see. The index makes it possible to search for specific animals and then find where they can be seen. Kyle Wagner
