A Montrose police officer shot and killed a man in a brief shootout tonight.

The man, who has not been identified, ran from an officer at a traffic stop at about 9 p.m. He parked his 1970s-era Chevrolet pickup in an alley behind The Red Barn Restaurant at 1413 East Main St., according to Denver Post freelance photographer William Woody, who was on the scene.

He died after being shot in the head about 30 feet from his truck as he croached to fire a rifle around a corner at an officer.

No officers were hit, Woody said.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation was investigating. A Montrose police spokeswoman did not immediately return a telephone call.
