GREELEY, Colo.—The Weld County commissioners are questioning the wisdom of prescribed burns on the Pawnee National Grasslands about 20 miles northwest of Greeley.
Commissioners asked Colorado members of Congress this week to look into the U.S. Forest Service’s decision to burn 3,000 acres of the 193,000-acre grasslands in March.
The commissioners questioned the cost, efficiency and safety of the burn and said the Forest Service ignored concerns of county residents.
The Forest Service says prescribed burns promote diverse vegetation, improve wildlife habitat and rangeland, mimic natural fires and reduce the danger of wildfires.
A spokeswoman says the Forest Service takes the commissioners’ concerns seriously and will respond to them.
