Surprised that Jay Cutler landed in Chicago? Don’t be.

The Bears’ lack of production at quarterback through the years has come despite their best efforts. To wit: Chicago since 1982 has used more first-round draft picks (four) on quarterbacks than any other NFL team.

The Bears used their first-rounder in 1982 on Jim McMahon. Since then, they’ve used No. 1s on Jim Harbaugh in 1987, Cade McNown in 1999 and Rex Grossman in 2003. Six teams — Washington, Tennessee, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit and Indianapolis — have selected three quarterbacks in Round One in the 27 drafts since 1982. Eleven have drafted one quarterback in the first round, and another, the Rams, haven’t drafted any.

The Broncos? They’ve selected two — Cutler in 2006 and John Elway’s, um, successor, Tommy Maddox, in 1992.
