DENVER—Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet has never run for public office, but he knows how to raise money.

The campaign of the appointed Democrat says Bennet raised more than $1.37 million in the first quarter of the year. Bennet was appointed to replace Sen. Ken Salazar when Salazar became Interior Secretary. But Bennet must stand for re-election in 2010.

Bennet campaign manager Craig Hughes says the Bennet campaign is “thrilled” with the total. Hughes says Bennet will likely need more than $10 million to retain the seat.

More details about Bennet’s fundraising will be made public later this month in a federal elections filing.
