PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.—The military says Colorado’s Peterson Air Force Base will lose about 150 jobs when a new nuclear strike command becomes operational in Louisiana.
The positions are currently assigned to the Air Force Space Command at Peterson but will shift to the Global Strike Command at Barksdale Air Force Base, La.
The Air Force announced Thursday that Barksdale will house the new command, which will consolidate oversight of the nation’s nuclear bombers and intercontinental missiles.
Currently, the bombers are controlled by the Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base, Va., and the missiles are controlled by the Space Command at Peterson.
The Air Force created the Global Strike Command after a series of blunders involving the handling of nuclear weapons.
Space Command spokeswoman Capt. Lindsey Hahn says Peterson’s job losses will be partially offset by about 95 new positions when the new Cyberspace Command is operational.
The Air Force hasn’t said where the Cyberspace Command will be based, but Hahn says it will report to the Space Command.
