LAMAR, Colo.—A Lamar woman who once said she drowned her two children in a bathtub after receiving a sign from a spider is asking for permission to leave the state mental hospital without supervision.
A hearing on 38-year-old Rebekah Amaya’s request is scheduled for April 28 in Lamar.
Amaya was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2005 in connection with the October 2003 deaths of 5-month-old Gabriel Amaya and 4-year-old Grace Headlee. A judge later ordered Rebekah Amaya to spend an indefinite amount of time at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo.
Prowers County District Judge Douglas Tallman issued an order last year granting her request to leave the hospital with supervision.
Prosecutors and some of the children’s relatives are opposing the request.
