A 22-year-old man has been arrested in a Colorado Springs shooting death.
Terry Gaines Jr. was arrested south of Colorado Springs early today on Interstate 25 after state troopers put down “stop sticks,” devices that blow out tires, Colorado Springs police said in a release.
Gaines fled a midnight shooting in a parking lot near 5825 Mark Dabling Blvd. after a concert, police said.
Officers responding to gunfire found a man in his early 20s slumped behind the wheel of a silver sedan. The shooting victim was taken to Penrose Main Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Right after the shooting, police were stopping vehicles leaving the area when one driver turned his car out of traffic and took off in the opposite direction. A police officer followed the vehicle, trying to pull it over, but the driver wouldn’t stop, police said.
As the vehicle fled south on I-25, the Colorado State Patrol took over the pursuit. Eventually, stop sticks were placed on the highway, and the vehicle came to a halt after its tires were blown out.
Gaines, the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, was taken into custody on suspicion of murder. The name of the shooting victim has not been released. Gaines is being held at the El Paso County Jail.
Police did not release a motive in the shooting.
