GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A Mesa County man is due back in court April 16 to face charges in the death of his 11-month-old granddaughter.

The Mesa County district attorney’s office asked for more time Thursday to file formal charges against 50-year-old Anthony Lawrence Woods.

Authorities say Woods had been working on a vehicle in his garage March 14 and was backing out into the driveway when Paytonn Elizabeth Garlick walked into the vehicle’s path.

The girl was unconscious and not breathing when emergency workers arrived. She died of head injuries two days later at a hospital.

The Colorado State Patrol arrested Woods on suspicion of drunken driving, vehicular assault and careless driving resulting in injury.
