He trails only Atlanta’s Chipper Jones (15) and the Yankees’ Derek Jeter (14). Helton went 1-for-4 with a walk. “It was good to see our offense in gear today,” Helton said.

Ian Stewart, the surprise starter at second base, handled himself well, scooping up three groundballs with ease. “I felt comfortable,” Stewart said. “The more I play there, the more at ease I’ll feel.”

Arizona relievers Tony Peña and Chad Qualls shut down the Rockies with the game in the balance. Qualls, the team’s new closer, worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
