Denver police pursued a fugitive through Lakewood streets Monday afternoon before finally forcing him to crash on the lawn of a Lakewood home.

Fugitive, David Stewart, fled his home in Denver when officers, following on a tip, came there to apprehend him with a SWAT team.

Stewart, who has a lengthy rap sheet that includes drug and forgery violations, fled the scene in a black truck, said Sonny Jackson, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department.

Stewart then stopped at an auto shop and switched vehicles. He left the shop driving an SUV, eventually trying to ram a patrol car. That collision left an officer with minor injuries.

Police continued to pursue him and a passenger, up Upham Street near West 14th Avenue. Police succeeded in using two SWAT vehicles to force Stewart to crash his car. Stewart was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life threatening, Jackson said. The passenger also was arrested.

Jackson said police are still searching for another man, Jesse Garis, who is believed to have helped by taking control of Stewart’s first get-away vehicle.
