An Olathe man accused of driving drunk in an accident that killed his son made his first court appearance Monday.

Juan Jose Prieto-Gonzalez, 32, was driving a 1989 Camaro when he ran a stop sign Sunday on County Road 5400 at Colorado 348 between Olathe and Delta, the Colorado State Patrol said. The Camaro drove right in front of a 1996 GMC Suburban, which rammed the Camaro.

The Montrose County coroner says 7-year-old Jose Juan Prieto, who was in the Camaro with his father, died instantly of neck and head injuries.

Trooper Darel Reed said everyone in the two vehicles was injured.

Prieto-Gonzalez is being held for investigation of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and driving under the influence.

In 1994, Prieto-Gonzalez was convicted of driving under the influence and driving under suspension.

Prosecutors say Prieto-Gonzalez had a blood-alcohol content of .257 in Sunday’s accident.
