PHOENIX — Over seven weeks in spring training, Franklin Morales showed he was worthy of a place in the Rockies’ rotation. One start today could change that. While admitting that no player improved more last month than Morales, manager Clint Hurdle would not guarantee the left-hander’s return to the rotation April 21.
Jason Hammel and Matt Belisle are joining the bullpen Friday, and Hammel will be considered for a rotation spot.
“This kid Hammel is a pretty good starter. So we need to see,” Hurdle said. “How Franklin pitches will have some input on what happens next. Some of our people think Hammel profiles better as a starter than a reliever, so a lot can happen.”
After last season — he was banished from the Rockies’ rotation in April and never returned — Morales understands the uncertainty. He remains confident because of his fastball command and changeup. “I know I don’t have to throw 94 miles per hour anymore,” he said.
While Morales’ exit will clear a spot for Hammel, the Rockies are likely to trade pitcher Juan Morillo, who is out of options, or place him on waivers to make room for Belisle.
Fowler update.
Dexter Fowler will make his first start today against Arizona lefty Doug Davis and is expected to be in the lineup for Friday’s home opener against Philadelphia lefty Cole Hamels. Hurdle won’t use him exclusively against left-handers. Because the switch-hitting Fowler’s left-handed swing is still a work in progress, he will be eased in against right-handers.
“We will keep him off No. 1 and No. 2 starters, and feed him some threes, fours and fives,” Hurdle said.
Footnotes.
Aaron Cook didn’t bother studying Monday’s videotape. “I know what I did and watching it sometimes can make it worse,” he said. . . . Taylor Buchholz has begun playing catch. He said his sore right elbow “doesn’t feel bad and doesn’t feel great.”
