So anyway, I’m sitting here reading Post Rockies writer Troy Renck’s account of Tuesday night’s game at Arizona.
Said Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero, when asked about Ubaldo Jimenez: “The guy’s got a pretty good arm.”
Right. Sure. And Michael Jordan was a pretty good basketball player.
It took the better part of two decades, but the Rockies finally have developed a star pitcher from within their ranks. Not a good pitcher, not a very good pitcher or a great pitcher.
A star.
It’s one thing to retire major league hitters. It’s another thing to blow them away. The D-Backs never had a chance Tuesday night. When Jimenez wasn’t melting them with 98-mph heat, he was tantalizing them with the best change-up this side of Pedro Martinez or Trevor Hoffman.
What a talent. I’m not sure how it’s going to play out as far as numbers go, but make no doubt, none whatsoever, that Jimenez has arrived as an elite big league starter.
As we speak, there’s no reason to think he won’t be pitching in his first All-Star Game. Kid’s that good.
