In his final days as a schoolboy, Buena Vista’s Mason Finley has continued to leave high-end marks. Last weekend at Eagle Valley, the 6-foot-8, 300-plus-pound senior, who is bound for UCLA, recorded a 69-foot, 1/4-inch shot put effort, the best in history for an in-stater. It bettered the previous mark of 68-2 1/2 by Arvada’s Jim Banich, who did it 27 years ago. Finley, in some circles the top track and field recruit nationally, is at the Arcadia, Calif., meet this weekend and will compete in the Nike meet next weekend in Jefferson County, then wrap up his prep career in May.
