GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Grand Junction firefighters say a man who started a fire that prompted an evacuation order for about 20 homes has been cited with a misdemeanor.

It isn’t clear whether the fire March 18 was started intentionally to burn off brush or was started by a spark from a chain saw, but fire department spokesman Mike Page says the man did not have a permit to be burning. His name wasn’t released.

The fast-moving wildfire jumped Colorado Highway 340 and burned about 40 acres. No homes burned.

The man could face a $200 fine.

Page says investigators are considering whether to seek restitution.
