Shannon Sharpe, a 6-foot, 190-pound point guard from Corona, Calif., is scheduled to sign a national letter of intent today to play basketball at Colorado. It’s the first day of the six-week spring signing period for men’s and women’s basketball.

“I’m telling you, Shannon is a freak of an athlete,” said Josh Giles, who coached Sharpe at Centennial High School. “I’ve never seen a better athlete, never mind coached one. Pete Carroll (of Southern California) called to see if Shannon might want to try football instead.”

Sharpe, no relation to the former Broncos tight end of the same name, averaged 17.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.7 assists as a senior in 2007-08.

Sharpe received scholarship offers only from mid-major programs. Thinking bigger, he enrolled last fall at a prep school, Laurinburg (N.C.) Academy, to try to improve his stock. But he became homesick and returned to California after a semester.

“I’m very athletic, so I feel I can bring energy to the program,” Sharpe said. “I can’t wait to get out there.”

Freshman guard Ryan Kelley, who averaged 2.6 points and 5.5 minutes in 17 games, will transfer out of the program, CU coach Jeff Bzdelik said Tuesday.

Davis, 14ers advance.

Josh Davis’ 33 points Tuesday night helped propel the top-seeded Colorado 14ers to a 129-108 victory over the seventh-seeded Erie BayHawks in the first round of the NBA Development League playoffs at the Broomfield Event Center.

Davis hit 10-of-15 shots. Dominique Coleman added 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Seven players scored in double figures for the 14ers, who advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

The 14ers play Saturday night at home against the winner of tonight’s Idaho Stampede-Austin Toros game.
