MOMBASA, Kenya — Somali pirates were back to business as usual Tuesday, attacking and damaging an American ship carrying humanitarian aid and seizing four other ships with 60 hostages.
The U.S. Liberty Sun and its crew of about 20 were safe under Navy escort after the pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons, said Navy Capt. Jack Hanzlik. He said the USS Bainbridge was on the scene.
The ships that were seized include Greek, Lebanese and Egyptian ships with crews of mostly Egyptians and Filipinos.
The brigands will not be intimidated by President Barack Obama’s pledge to confront the high-seas bandits, according to a pirate based in the Somali coastal town of Harardhere.
