GREELEY, Colo.—The judge who halted an identity theft investigation targeting illegal immigrants in Colorado is retiring.
Chief Larimer County District Court Judge James Hiatt announced his retirement Tuesday, a day after his controversial ruling in the ID theft case.
His announcement also comes a week after Chief Weld County District Judge Roger Klein said he plans to retire.
Hiatt’s final day is July 31, while Klein’s is June 30.
Hiatt ruled Monday that a Weld County investigation targeting illegal immigrants through their tax records was illegal. He put a halt to the probe and ordered authorities to destroy or return records seized in a search of Amalia’s Translation and Tax Services in Greeley.
Hiatt was appointed district judge in April 1986 and became chief judge in 2000.
