Nothing says Easter like a little death metal. Or maybe not. But for the vigorous pit at the Sunday evening, there was no better way to burn off all the chocolate and jelly beans than by joining in on the mayhem of some Swedish melodic metal: style.
The songs, chalk full of Norse mythology and Viking Age goodness, mixed powerful melodies with crushing rhythm guitars into an all-encompassing sound that towered over the crowd, much like the members themselves. The unmistakably Scandinavian vocalist (Johan Hegg) shifted in and out of the fog while belting out anthems like “Varyags of Miklagaard” and “Runes to my Memory.” All the while, the golden locks of the remaining quintet swirled around him in a near perfect unison. For those willing to brave the Viking frenzy, it was a vision to admire. — Tina Hagerling
