DENVER—The teachers’ union and lawmakers have reached a compromise on a new system aimed at tracking the performance of educators in low-income schools.

The Senate Education Committee unanimously backed the measure on Wednesday.

House Bill 1065 would set up a statewide system largely to keep track of how many high-performing teachers and principals are working in low-income schools.

A vote had been delayed for several weeks because the Colorado Education Association wanted to make sure it wasn’t used to punish teachers for their performance.

The compromise says districts can use the information to reassign teachers or order more training. But a district can’t punish its teachers for not measuring up to the performance of teachers in other districts.
