GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—District Attorney Martin Beeson says his investigation into allegations of misconduct by Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario has turned up “not a scintilla of evidence” of criminal wrongdoing.

The investigation was prompted by a claim in an unsigned e-mail sent to two county commissioners and two reporters in early February. The e-mail alleged Vallario had a romantic relationship with a jail officer and then promoted that officer over better-qualified candidates.

Vallario has said the woman’s promotions were based on merit.

Beeson said Wednesday the investigation “clears their good names.”

He says his findings were reviewed by District Attorney Mark Hurlburt of Eagle, who supported his conclusions.
