NEW YORK — J.C. Penney Co. and Macy’s Inc. had their corporate credit ratings cut to junk by Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services, which cited “deepening concern” about U.S. department stores in the recession.

Lower consumer spending and fewer visits to malls will hurt both companies’ sales and earnings this year, the ratings company said in separate statements Thursday.
