Colorado’s largest utility says the price it charges for natural gas will fall by 10 percent next month compared with the current month.

Xcel Energy Inc. said Friday that it submitted the proposed rate cut to state regulators at the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

Xcel said the lower gas price combined with warmer weather could bring a 39 to 45 percent decline in residential and small-business gas bills in May compared with the same month a year earlier. Typical residential bills will be $25.53, compared with $42.03 in May 2008 and $41.15 this month.

The utility said gas prices are falling because of reduced demand and bigger inventory.
