BOULDER, Colo.—Authorities have determined a mysterious object responsible for the evacuation of a Boulder high school was a geocaching box.
Police say a Fairview High teacher called authorities at 11:40 a.m. Monday after seeing a man and woman burying “some kind of box” near a stone sign in front of the school. The couple drove away in an SUV with Nevada license plates.
A bomb squad was called to investigate, and students were evacuated to Southern Hills Middle School.
Authorities later determined the box was an item used in geocaching, a treasure-hunting game in which someone hides a container and posts the coordinates online. Geocachers use GPS devices to find the hidden caches.
The cache at Fairview High was hidden about two years ago by Darrel Billington, a history teacher at the school. Billington says he received a district grant for the cache.
