PATNA, India — Police said that suspected Maoist rebels conducted a series of attacks today that included temporarily taking more than 250 train passengers hostage, a pre-dawn explosion at a railway station, a blast at a government office and the slaying of a truck driver.
The rebels have asked people in eastern India to boycott polling, and authorities suspect the attacks were an attempt to disrupt parliamentary voting scheduled for Thursday.
Police say rebels killed 17 people across the country in attacks timed to disrupt voting last week during the first phase of the elections.
