The House on Thursday approved a plan to audit Pinnacol Assurance, the quasi-governmental agency that provides workers’ compensation insurance.

The agency came under fire weeks ago when lawmakers threatened to take $500 million from Pinnacol’s surplus to balance the state’s budget.

Senate Bill 281 revokes some of the freedoms granted Pinnacol in 2002 and clarifies that the insurer falls under state control. The bill passed 33-30 and heads to the Senate.
