Colorado sophomore quarterback Tyler Hansen underwent surgery Sunday morning on his right (throwing) thumb. In a release, CU trainer Miguel Rueda said the surgery was successful and an average six-week mending time is expected.
Hansen, who had been battling co-starter Cody Hawkins throughout spring ball, injured his thumb on a teammate’s helmet in Saturday’s spring game. Although he believed the injury occurred in the third quarter, he wasn’t aware of the extent and continued to play through the final period, mostly handing off the ball.
After the spring game, Hansen said he was having the surgery so he could be ready to throw in June for summer workouts.
The starting job isn’t expected to be finalized until August.
