In his debut as a Rockies starter, Jason Hammel had hoped to go deep into the game and make a bid for a permanent spot in the rotation. He was terrific for the first two innings Monday night. But the Padres tagged him for four runs in the third, in part because left fielder Ryan Spilborghs misplayed a dying line drive into a two-run triple. When Jody Gerut led off the fourth with a solo homer and David Eckstein walked, Hammel’s night was over. His final line: three-plus innings pitched, five runs (four earned) and seven hits allowed.
Young rocked.
Padres starter Chris Young gave up eight earned runs in three-plus innings. The eight runs surrendered were a career high. He had been 5-1 with a 3.28 ERA in 11 starts vs. the Rockies. Patrick Saunders, The Denver Post
