Jefferson County’s Head Start program is back on track after commissioners Tuesday gave it a $700,000 cash infusion from the general fund. The program, which helps needy children, was deep in the red as a result of sloppy bookkeeping. The commission also approved $650,000 for the program in 2010.

The federal government, along with the state, funds 80 percent of Head Start through grants. But it requires Jefferson County to chip in 20 percent of the costs.

Head Start provides preschool to needy children, as well as medical and mental-health care for families. The program serves 406 families in Jefferson, Park, Clear Creek and Gilpin counties.
