KIOWA, Colo.—The new Elbert County courthouse will open Monday, more than three years after leaking water and mold forced the old building to close.
At 11,600 square feet, the Elbert County Justice Center is nearly double the size of the old court building.
The new courthouse has two courtrooms, a jury assembly room, a file review room and three public counters.
The old courthouse closed in January 2006, forcing residents with court business to drive to the Douglas County Justice Center in Castle Rock, 21 miles west of Kiowa.
A grand opening ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday.
