COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Semiconductor manufacturer Atmel Corp. has cut another 293 jobs in the company’s second round of layoffs in five months.
Atmel says 266 employees were laid off Tuesday at its Colorado Springs plant, where 249 jobs were cut in December. The remaining 27 jobs were eliminated at Atmel’s headquarters in San Jose, Calif.
The company issued a statement saying “these actions are necessary to ensure Atmel’s competitiveness.” It said Atmel was committed to ensuring a smooth transition for affected workers and would provide severance and outplacement services.
The Colorado Springs plant still has more than 1,200 workers. Atmel has some 2,000 employees in North America.
