FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A judge overseeing a Larimer County murder trial has banned the media from filing stories from inside the courtroom.

District Court Judge Daniel J. Kaup had ordered the media to wait until the end of the business day before filing any updates. Kaup modified his order Friday morning to allow media updates outside the courtroom during breaks in court proceedings.

Kaup’s order covers the trial of James Whitler, who’s facing first-degree murder charges in the death of Stephen Allen, who was serving divorce papers on Whitler in May 2008.

Coloradoan Executive Editor Bob Moore said prosecutors raised concerns over updates on Twitter filed by reporters sitting in the gallery. The Coloradoan and the Loveland Reporter-Herald were considering a direct appeal to the Colorado Supreme Court when Kaup modified his ruling.
