A 20-year-old man who might have been drinking was killed early this morning in a one-vehicle rollover accident in which he was thrown from his car, authorities say.

Maxwell Scott Dinkel, 20, of Fort Collins was killed in the accident that happened on the 2600 block of Prospect Road just before 1 a.m., authorities say.

Dinkel was driving a 1995 Infiniti east on Prospect when the car struck the median, traveled along the median for 380 yards, rolled and hit a light pole, according to police officer Scott Crumbaker.

It is believed that Dinkel was intoxicated at the time of the accident, Crumbaker said.

Dinkel, who was from Aurora, was working part time and was enrolled in some college courses in anticipation of going to Colorado State University full time, his uncle, Gary Malpiede said.

“He was getting his life together,” Malpiede said. “That’s what makes it doubly sad.”

Malpiede said his nephew was excited about life.

“He was fun-loving,” he said. “Everything was an adventure.”

The road where the accident happened was closed for five hours this morning while investigators collected evidence.
