RIFLE, Colo.—State highway crews have filled a sinkhole on Interstate 70 west of Rifle, but more work is planned starting Monday to fill any spaces around an underground gas pipeline.
The hole, about 6 feet in diameter and 8 inches deep, was found in the eastbound lanes Wednesday. The lanes were reopened Thursday evening.
The Colorado Department of Transportation says the sinkhole likely was caused by voids around a natural gas pipeline that filled with water. Williams Production laid the pipeline under the interstate last February.
The company will drill holes in the road to inject grout material around the pipe. The eastbound lanes will be closed starting at 8 a.m. Monday and then the westbound lanes will be closed.
Traffic will be detoured onto U.S. 6 between Rulison (Exit 81) and West Rifle (Exit 87).
