Tell us where it hurts
“ER Vets: Life in an Animal Emergency Room,” by Donna Jackson (Sandpiper books, $8.99)
A different Club Med.
Colorado journalist Donna Jackson spent months interviewing staff at the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University. The result is a slim 72-page book, heavy on photographs (including an excellent endoscopic shot of a bottle cap lodged in a dog’s stomach), about how urgent-care veterinarians do their work. Now we know why the bill is so high.
How sweet it is!

Candy is dandy.
Even in this tough economy, a little spare change can buy a few minutes of happiness (and a few more inches on the hips if you aren’t careful). Wander among shelves filled with clear cannisters of bright candy, and travel to a time when Squirrel Nut Zippers meant candy, not music, and candy cigarettes were an acceptable children’s treat. Prices start at less than $1.
Cuteness overload
