DENVER—A Texas man has pleaded guilty to threatening President Barack Obama and the Mall of America in Minneapolis.

Timothy Ryan Gutierrez pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of making threats by e-mail. Prosecutors dropped a charge of threatening to use an explosive in exchange for his plea.

The 21-year-old from Andrews, Texas, was accused of sending the e-mails from his brother’s Cortez home to the FBI a week before Obama’s inauguration. Gutierrez claimed the e-mails were a prank.

His attorney says Gutierrez could face up to 18 months in prison at his July 31 sentencing.

Gutierrez has been in custody since surrendering to authorities on Jan. 29.
