GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Colorado authorities say a Mexican national suspected in a 20-year-old slaying in Palisade has been arrested in Mexico and will stand trial there.
The Mesa County sheriff and Colorado attorney general said Tuesday that 59-year-old Rafael “Shorty” Garcia Aguilar was arrested Thursday in Colima, Mexico.
Aguilar is accused in the July 4, 1989, shooting death of Charles “Chuck” Porter in Palisade, about 8 miles east of Grand Junction and 180 miles west of Denver.
The attorney general’s Foreign Prosecutions Unit located Aguilar after Mesa County authorities asked state officials to review the case.
Mexican law allows its citizens to be prosecuted in their home country on allegations from other countries. It’s not yet known what charges Aguilar faces.
