The Vail Valley Foundation and the U.S. Ski Team have officially entered Vail-Beaver Creek as a candidate for the 2015 world alpine ski championships. The other candidates are St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

Vail-Beaver Creek hosted the biennial event in 1989 and 1999. The only other North American resort to host the championships was Aspen (1950). If it wins the 2015 event, Beaver Creek plans to build a new women’s downhill course adjacent to the Birds of Prey men’s downhill. The Birds of Prey was built for the 1999 worlds and has been a regular World Cup stop since then.

“Beaver Creek/Vail has long been one of the world’s foremost leaders and innovators in alpine ski racing,” said ski team chief executive Bill Marolt. “The time is right for this prestigious event to come back to America.”

The selection of the 2015 host will be made in June 2010.

“We are excited to get underway with the candidate process,” said foundation president Ceil Folz, “and we look forward to working with USSA and all of our partners.”
