WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Volleys of gunfire from a man holed up in a house kept New Zealand police from retrieving the nearby body of a shot officer as they warned today the already hours-long standoff could continue for days.
The dead officer’s body lay beside his police car outside the house where a suspected gunman fired a fusillade of shots from an automatic rifle during a police drug raid early Thursday, Superintendent Sam Hoyle told reporters. The shots also seriously wounded two officers and a bystander.
