DENVER—The family of a man shot by Aurora police after he fired at officers wants an outside investigation into the incident.
Relatives of 18-year-old Darius Murray say they doubt the version of events given by police because their account changed after the shooting. Aurora police initially said the teenager shot himself in the head after getting into a shootout with officers Saturday night.
Police later said he was wounded by officers.
Police Chief Daniel Oates said in a statement issued Wednesday that he’s standing behind the officers’ actions and that the shooting was justified.
Police say the shooting happened after officers were called to investigate a call by someone who reported that someone was in his vehicle. Police say the teenager began shooting at officers when they approached him.
Murray remains hospitalized and in serious condition. Police say he is being investigated for attempted murder.
