FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Larimer County officials say declining revenues at the county’s landfill is forcing them to close the facility on Sundays.
County Public Works Director Marc Engemoen told commissioners Tuesday competition from private landfills and the construction industry’s decline means less material is coming to the facility. He says revenue at the landfill is expected to drop by as much as 20 percent this year.
The closures would begin in June.
Declining revenue at the landfill is also affecting employees of the county’s Solid Waste Department. Officials say they will have to take one day of unpaid leave every two weeks for the remainder of the year unless revenues improve.
Engemoen says the department is facing a $1 million budget shortfall.
