LAKEWOOD — Add another record to Mason Finley’s legacy.
The Buena Vista senior broke the Class 3A state meet and Jefferson County Stadium record in the discus today with a toss of 214 feet, 1 inch. The throw, his final one of the day, broke Finley’s state meet record of 211-6 which he set last year.
Finley broke the national high school discus mark at a meet in Alamosa on April 25 with a throw of 236-6. That record is pending.
Kenny Peterson of Rye finished second with a toss of 145-8, while Roaring Fork’s Jon Araujo was third at 139-4. But the overflow crowd that surrounded the discus ring was there to see Finley.
Finley opened the competition with a toss of 211-2 and hovered around 210 feet in his next four tosses — two in preliminaries and his first two in the finals — before breaking his record.
Finley, who will also throw in the shot put competition Friday, will attend UCLA in the fall on a track scholarship.
