Hawkins continues to excel in closer role with Houston
LaTroy Hawkins’ career renaissance continues in Houston. Designated for assignment a year ago by the Yankees, he has gone from effective reliever to the Astros’ closer over the past 11 months. He struck out Brad Hawpe with the tying run on first base to seal Thursday’s victory and earn his fifth save. “I pulled that out of the air,” Hawkins said of the devastating slider.

Todd Helton finished the homestand 11-for-29 to pull within three hits of 2,000. He is trying to become only the fourth active player to record all 2,000 with the same team, a list that includes Derek Jeter.
