DENVER—A man who posed as a MoneyGram International Inc. employee to defraud the wire transfer service of $625,000 has been sentenced to more than 2 1/2 years in prison.
Forty-one-year-old Patrick Hamilton pleaded guilty Feb. 13 to wire fraud. He was sentenced to prison during a hearing in U.S. District Court Wednesday and also ordered to pay restitution, the U.S. attorney announced Friday.
Prosecutors say Hamilton posed as a MoneyGram employee to tell vendors to send a test transactions of anywhere from $5,000 to $9,000 to another location. Prosecutors say Hamilton paid someone else $200 to $1,200 to pick up the money and kept the rest.
Prosecutors say more than 200 of these transactions occurred from 2004 to April 2008.
